Dear Bubby,
I am a recent graduate of a top rated university law school and now working in a very large and prestigious firm on Wall Street.
I have to say here, how wonderful daddy has been, giving several hundred thousand dollars donation to the university after I was unfairly put at the bottom of the list and threatened with expulsion just because I didn’t come to classes or do the work THEY decided I should do. If I didn’t attend classes it was because I was out, with a few of my friends, doing humanitarian work and protesting the absurdity of many governmental fiats.
Now working in the office, where daddy is the Chairman of the Board, I am ashamed to say that I find many of the problems that I fought against while in university, here, and the worst thing is that the 100 or so attorneys here do not even realize how they are being exploited.
It is unbelievable that the lawyers work more than eight hours a day, EVERY DAY. Sometimes they are at their desks until the wee hours of the morning. They never take time off to do social justice work. Right now I have taken three days off (which reminds me, I should call the office and tell them I have taken this time out) this week as I am working with a volunteer group that is fighting for the rights of a recent undocumented migrant, the Zika fly.
Then there is the fact about wage disparity. We new guys don’t make a tenth of what the lawyers of thirty years, or so, and the partners make. Is this fair? The excuse that I am given is ridiculous, they tried to explain to me that these men and women have argued hundred million dollar cases and have even gone to the Supreme Court. Isn’t that ridiculous? Our own president got a Nobel Peace Prize not for what he did but for what they anticipated he would do, why can’t I get the same consideration?
Then, well, this is unbelievable! We have cases of rape, murder, serial killers, etc. and Bubby, you will not believe this, there is no trigger warning!!!!! We are not told in advance about these gruesome cases so we cannot run out to a safe room! And ,that is another problem, THERE IS NO SAFE ROOM, no room with soft music, fluffy couches, t.v. and coloring books with crayons where we can go and have out feelings soothed after hearing things that might upset us.
I won’t go into the fact that there is no informal Friday…..you know where you can come to the office in shorts, tee shirts and flip flops. People could really let their hair down. We might even bring in some sand and Hawaiian music, you know, to relax everyone.
At any rate, some of the newcomers think I should go to daddy and, in a kind way, teach him how to run an office in a way that everyone can get along beautifully. I would do this however I want to wait until daddy buys the Porsche convertible he promised me, but they are insisting I do this now.
What do you think?
Equal Justice For All
Dear Equal,
I do suggest that you wait until “daddy” buys you that Porsche, then get in it and drive away to Alaska or Northern Canada. By no means should you go down to Arizona or New Mexico as it is very hot there and your brains are already fried.
